September Focus: Self-Care for Foster Parents                    

Topic: Resource Family Self Care

Please Note: DCS has a 6 hour virtual training on resource parent self-care that will count for face to face training hours. Unfortunately, you can only take this training once, so if you are unsure if you have taken this training, please let Brianna Rainheimer know and she can check for you. It is offered multiple times, but it is the same training each time. Since this is a DCS training, you will need to be registered at least 3 business days in advance.

Hands of Hope
  • Supports foster parents throughout the State
  • Care Communities to circle around the family with meals, tutoring, assisting in housework, transportation, emotional support, and spiritual support.
  • Care Portals are active in Allen, Johnson, Kosciusko, Marion, Madison, Wabash, Warrick, Vigo, and Vanderburgh Counties. Families work with their FCM to request items needed for their foster youth through the Care Portal. Examples of items needed: toddler bed; stroller; highchair; child specific equipment.
  • Clothing Closet

 

ITown Church
  • Serves the Marion County area
  • Foster Care Go Team helps to organize and receive inventory as well as prepare and deliver requests for foster parents. These provide essential items to a foster family after receiving placements
  • Foster Care Closet
  • Bags for foster youth to provide necessary items in foster care
  • Foster Care Support Groups weekly

 

Foster the Family Support Group
  • In person event held on the third Monday of each month
  • Location: Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 1505 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis, IN 46202

 

Borrowed Hearts
  • Supports foster families and youth with necessities in Southwest Indiana
  • Monthly Support Group
  • Borrowed Hearts Store provides free clothing, hygiene products, baby formula, baby gear, diapers, toys, etc. Exclusively available for foster families

 

One Simple Wish
  • A foster youth’s wish can be submitted by the Department of Child Services Family Case Manager

 

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
    • Statewide through the local WIC Office
    • Available for families with infants through 5 years old placed in their home
    • Local office information can be found here.

 

The Isaiah 1:17 Project
  • Serves Southwest Indiana
  • Provide Bags of Hope to youth entering foster care
  • DreamCycle program allows a child to build a bike and take it home with them
  • Family Care Connections program to circle around a family to provide support with spiritual, physical, and emotional needs
  • Foster Success Program which offers scholarships for Ivy Tech and Oakland City University

  • Serves Central Indiana
  • Birthday Blessing program to provide an additional gift to youth on their birthday
  • Foster Parent appreciation events throughout the year

  • Teen Connect Program is a weekly collaboration of foster youth and adult volunteers to engage in activities and build relationships in a positive atmosphere.
